My parents and their tire purchasing strategy.

Kinja'd!!!

So my mom's Vue needs new tires. The two in the front are worn pretty low, the backs have some tread life left, but probably not enough to not justify new tires. Not to mention one has a nail in it that she's been driving on for a while.

My dad says he'll just have the nail removed, even though we've already been told it can't be patched.

So I wonder, why not just get tires on all four corners, instead of two on the front now, and then in a few more months on the rear cause they're finally worn down to my dad's replacement level?

This is their strategy on every car except the truck. Better known as the vehicle with tires that cost like $500 a corner.

In the end he'll probably have to get all four anyway because as been said before by another mechanic, the nail in the rear tire can't be removed.

Your parents aren't completely daft. (nail not withstanding)

If I can safely get a few hundred more miles out of the tires then it's worth it over the lifetime of the vehicle.

lol jokes I'll go skid the not-so-worn tires until they need replacing too.

My dad will ask me multiple times to look up tires on tirerack and show them to him. Then he will just go over to Sears and spend more on tires I didn't even show him. who knows???

I'd understand if the rears were almost brand new and the fronts were worn, which a couple times has been the case because my mom runs over a lot of nails driving on a highway still being finished.

But, I'd argue there's almost an indistinguishable amount of tread on the back compared to the front.

Eh, if he's paying 500 a corner, he is well past overpaying. Mine are 33's and are only 240 a corner.

if I'll need to replace them within a month? not worth waiting.

if it's still a good 3 months worth of daily driving? yeah, I can wait. I spend $200+ per tire so having the extra cash in case of emergency gives me peace of mind.

Okay, his pricing is off. $300 a corner.

Are there any used tire sellers in your city? That would be better than not getting any tires for the rear and used tires can be had for $50-$80 with tons of tread left. I mean it would be a great option and winter is coming soon so you don't want to have your mom driving around with screwed up tires.

Lots of people do that. I don't get it either.

If your Vue is AWD I suggest getting four tires. I've seen mismatched tires cause stupid and expensive issues (noisy, worn out transfer cases and diffs) and mess with traction control systems in dangerous ways. Four new, matching, cheap, no-name tires from some mega tire outlet would be better than two expensive Michelins and two mostly worn out tires.

when I was 20, I'd literally drive each tire until it blew and I bought used $25 tires and I'd switch them out on the road. Pretty crazy to think about that now, but I saved a lot of money. Not particularly unsafe driving a huge Olds Delta 88 with a 307 as you could feel the tire unravel/slip belts hundreds of miles before the final failure. Perhaps having 3 newer tires on the other corners helped because it didn't hydroplane or get ugly at all.
